Attendance with the Open Data Project for Schools – now including Covid-19 “X Codes”
Attendance is one of the biggest challenges that schools face, more than ever in these challenging times. If pupils aren’t in school then they are likely to fall behind, and schools are under pressure to meet their responsibilities to record attendance and follow up absence.
One of the added complications this term is the recording and reporting of Covid-19 related absences. The DfE have issued new guidance on how schools should record any pupil unable to attend school due to shielding, quarantine, lockdown or suspected cases, along with a specific code for confirmed cases.
We know that managing attendance in schools is often a laborious process involving spreadsheets and data exports, and the ambiguous new use of the existing Code X is causing issues for data managers, teachers and school leaders. Many attendance systems aren’t configured to differentiate between Covid-19 related absence and the existing “not required to be in school” absences.
Through the Open Data Project for Schools, we have developed a Covid-19-specific tracking module as part of our existing Attendance Matters project. Our dashboards and breakdown of registration codes mean that schools can access a same-day Covid-19 absence dashboard.
